FAQ

Things students ask.

Do I need to bring my own instrument?

Not for your first trial — we'll provide what you need. Once you enrol, we'll recommend a starter kit for Chenda that suits your level and budget.

How long until I can perform a full Chenda piece?

Most beginners perform their first short song within 8–12 weeks of consistent practice.

Can I switch teachers if it isn't a fit?

Absolutely. The teacher-student match matters more than anything else — just tell us and we'll re-match, no awkwardness.

Is there a recital?

Yes — we host an annual GADD9 showcase plus quarterly in-house performances. Participation is encouraged but never forced.

What makes Chenda at GADD9 different?

Personalised pacing, a teacher matched to your goals, and a community of fellow students who genuinely cheer you on. We measure success in how often you actually practise.

The Story

Where Chenda comes from — and where it lives now.

The thunder of Kerala. Stick, posture and thaalam — chenda the traditional way with disciplined daily practice.

The chenda is a cylindrical wooden percussion instrument central to Kerala's temple, ritual and performing-arts traditions. It has been documented in Kerala for at least a thousand years and is deeply tied to art forms such as Kathakali, Koodiyattam, Theyyam and the great temple percussion ensembles known as melams.
